Morales-Lee, makes evocative drawings that explore the themes of motherhood, belonging and trauma. His unique approach involves a blend of various female figures symbolising the archetypal ‘mother,’ as well as his own presence as a model. In this complex exploration, he seeks to unravel how society both processes and embraces the concept of motherhood, all the while grappling with the intricate effects of having two mothers, the one who gave him up and the one who took him in.

The drawings aim to revolve around the powerful emotions of rejection, desire and shame, all intricately interwoven with an idealised perception of belonging and family. Simultaneously, his work provides a raw, unfiltered insight into his personal journey, a narrative of forging one’s identity that emerges from deep life experiences. By shifting his focus inward and often portraying himself, he confronts the viewer with an unyielding gaze, demanding acceptance of his very existence, emphasising the concept of being enough, and subtly prompting the viewer to reevaluate their own understanding of self and belonging.

Patrick Morales-Lee was taught by the painter John Virtue, In recent years, there has been growing interest in Patrick’s artwork, with exhibitions alongside renowned artists like Antony Gormley, Thomas Price, Gavin Turk, Sarah Maple, Anthony Lister, Shepard Fairey, Will Martyr and Nettie Wakefield. His works are now part of the collections of many well-known buyers, including The Soho House permanent collection.
