Much of my inspiration is drawn from the East Sussex landscape.  I’ve lived in Hastings for just over two decades now and am still enthralled by the beauty I see around me. I spend a lot of time walking my dogs up on the East Hill, and am always inspired by the everchanging light and cloud formations that make the same landscape always beautiful and always different. 

Light and its absence is what inspires me. The strong beautiful colours of the land and sea when hit by sunlight contrasted with the darkest darks where the sun can’t reach. I think this is why I need to both paint and draw. I want to capture both the gorgeous colour in the landscape, and also the tonal gradations of light and dark. 

While my work is rooted in traditional representation, I’m drawn to the underlying patterns in nature. Whether it’s the horizontal lines that exist in the land and water that are subsequently echoed in the skies and wind turbines, to the geometric diagonals of light surging out from behind an organically shaped cloud mass and altering the colour of all that they reach. 

Lisa was born in Stockport, Greater Manchester, but grew up in Ontario, Canada.

She studied fine art at the University of Western Ontario in the 1990’s and had a brief stint teaching English to foreign students.

She returned to the UK in 2000, moving to Hastings to get married and start a family. 

Lisa returned to art once her children were older and is now focused on making paintings and drawings of the beautiful East Sussex landscape. 

While her work is rooted in traditional representation, she’s drawn to the underlying patterns in nature. Whether it’s the diagonal rays of light surging out from behind organically shaped clouds, or dancing dots of light on water. She finds the challenge of representing light and it's absence, fulfilling and rewarding.
