Seed heads hold a never ending attraction in their sculptural shapes, detail and also the way they change from seed holders to mere empty shells. They are always drawn from life and picked from the garden or local landscape. Ink is the perfect medium to capture them.
Wendy Smith is a botanical artist living and working in Kent. She became interested in Botanical Art in 2011 when she enrolled for a course with Kent Adult Education. She has exhibited with the Society of Botanical Artists (Certificate of Botanical Merit 2015) and at the Royal Horticultural Society Botanical Art Show in 2019 and 2022; awarded a silver medal both times. She also exhibited at the Society of Graphic Fine Art exhibition in 2022 and 2023. The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh florilegium holds one of her works.
Wendy is a passionate gardener and her art is an endeavour to capture plants at one moment in time. The many stages of a plant fascinate her, from bud to flower to seed head. Her garden is her resource.
Favourite media include ink, also coloured pencil, but she also experiments with collage and watercolour. She is interested in stretching the boundaries of botanical art from the traditional.
Commissions are welcome.
